Place Lux

Place du Luxembourg, or Place Lux as it’s commonly known, is the square behind the European Parliament in Brussels where Commissioners, Members of the European Parliament and their assistants, national diplomats, lobbyists and journalists meet to discuss the latest EU policy developments and exchange gossip – over coffee, lunch or a drink. It is the beating heart of EU Brussels.

Place Lux’s popularity with the EU crowd is a relatively recent phenomenon. Rondpoint Schuman – a brisk 10-minute walk from Place Lux and home to the Commission and Council HQs – used to be the focal point for most political, official, lobbying and media activity. But as the powers of the European Parliament began to expand, so did the presence of lobbyists and lawyers in the Place Lux area. Today not only is the Parliament on a par with the Council in terms of decision-making powers; it is also the most open and transparent of the three Institutions, making it – and its direct surroundings – a natural place for people to meet, discuss and have a good time.

In the last 10 years Place Lux has undergone a complete transformation. The old Luxembourg railway station has been demolished and moved underground. New Parliament buildings have been erected. The square has been repaved, the sidewalks broadened. New bars and restaurants have opened up. On a sunny day, competition for a lunch table is fierce and the bars are packed after work – especially on Thursdays and Fridays. Many a new relationship (business as well as pleasure) has started here.

Place Lux is to Brussels what K Street is to Washington, DC: a small geographical area where interest representatives of all backgrounds have established their base and peddle their trade.
